The University of Lagos Sustainability Challenge 2.0 recorded a recovery of 621, 661 plastic bottles in March 2024.
The figure was reached through the concerted efforts of staff, students and other stakeholders across campus.
Speaking at the bimonthly Prize Presentation Ceremony held on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the UNILAG Green Hub, the Project Lead/Co-ordinator, Dr. Abdulganiyu Adelopo said “not minding the deficit of 128, 339 to hit the 750,000 target for the first semester of the current 2023/2024 academic session, the Sustainability Challenge has been a huge success especially when compared with the targets and recoveries of the last academic session”.
He described the awareness and level of participation in the Sustainability Challenge 2.0 as impressive especially when viewed against the volume of inputs from stakeholders.
Topping the list of winners for the month of March, 2024 is Oladapo Olayinka who made an individual recovery of 52,938 plastic bottles. She is followed by Joy Eniola who also made an individual recovery of 18,023 plastic bottles.
The UNILAG International School (ISL) made a recovery of 18,350 plastic bottles while the UNILAG Sports Centre delivered a total of 14,311 plastic bottles within the month under review.
In his remarks while presenting incentives to the winners, Head of Physical Planning, Department of Works and Physical Planning, University of Lagos, Architect Olaide Oladokun commended all participants in the UNILAG Sustainability Challenge 2.0 for their keen interest and commitment.
While applauding handlers of the challenge for a job well done, Arc. Oladokun said the impacts of the Sustainability Challenge would manifest more along the UNILAG coastal line.
The UNILAG Sustainability Challenge kicked off in the 2022/2023 academic session with a mandate to curb the throwing of plastic bottles into the lagoon through the University, reduce the level of Co2 which accrues from the burning and production of plastics as well as provide incentives to those involved with the sorting of plastics on campus.
The challenge is targeted at tracking, collecting and recycling 750,000 plastic bottles on campus within the first semester of the ongoing 2023/2024 Academic Session.
