On Friday, December 1, 2023, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, led an anti-HIV/AIDS awareness campaign walk that kicked off at the Senate House of the University.
The sensitization walk formed part of activities lined up for the 2023 Annual Health Week, organized by UNILAG Medical Centre. The Health Week began with a Public Lecture held at the Afe Babalola Auditorium on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 (Please click here for details).
Speaking at the commencement of the walk at the Senate House carpark, Professor Ogunsola described the campaign as a global initiative, adding that “the University of Lagos, as a citadel of learning, is duty bound to be at the forefront of HIV awareness”.
The Vice-Chancellor, who was accompanied by the Acting Registrar, O. E. Makinde; Director of Medical Services, Dr. Mrs. Olayinka Coker; Dr. Afolabi Adebayo, staff of the University among others, noted that due to the large population of UNILAG staff and students, the need to raise awareness about HIV cannot be over emphasized. She underscored the importance of taking necessary precautions to guard against HIV, stressing that carelessness can have serious consequences.
The campaign message was delivered in a clear manner at various locations across the Akoka campus of the University. At the Faculty of Law, Dr. Adebayo stressed the importance of safe sex practices and getting tested for HIV, as early detection and treatment can save lives. He warned against unprotected sex, explaining that it can lead to HIV infection.
The awareness walk, which ended at the UNILAG Medical Centre where participants were encouraged to get tested for HIV and to learn more about the virus, is one of many initiatives by the University to commemorate World AIDS Day, and promote HIV/AIDS prevention and education.
