Prof. Ogunsola Hails FEC’s Exemption of Tertiary Institutions from IPPIS

Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, has applauded the Federal Executive Council’s decision to exempt tertiary institutions from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

Speaking on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at the Public Presentation of a book in honour of a former (5^th) Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of UNILAG, Professor Vremudia Diejomaoh, Prof. Ogunsola also appreciated the detachment of Federal Universities from the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation. She described the move as one which addresses some of the bureaucratic bottlenecks plaguing the autonomy of federal universities over the years.

She attributed the milestone to the tireless struggles and resilience of university staff unions over the years, a feat which according to her, will aid the actualization and implementation of several policies for developmental purposes and advancement of the tertiary education subsector in Nigeria.

Prof. Ogunsola emphasized that universities are not just about students but more about the intelligentsias whose duty is to groom and impact the students while expanding the frontiers of knowledge.

While showering encomiums on the Honouree, Professor Vremudia Diejomaoh, the Vice-Chancellor reiterated UNILAG’s commitment to always honour, celebrate and cherish the impact of eggheads who have passed through the university.

Also in his remarks, the Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences UNILAG, Professor Laja Odukoya, harped on the need for government at all levels to always listen to the academic communities especially when it involves policy formulation and developmental issues.

Prof. Odukoya also paid glowing tributes to Professor Vremudia Diejomaoh for his impact in the field of Economics and his contributions to national development.

Titled: Enhancing Nigerian Development Prospect, Essays in Honour of Professor Vremudia Diejomaoh, the book was reviewed by Prof. Michael Adejugbe who took the gathering through chapters of publication. He commended the intellectual efforts of all contributors and challenged government to adopt and implement the recommendations in the publication for national development.

Highpoint of the ceremony which held at the FSS Lecture Theatre was the formal unveiling of the book amidst pump and ceremony.

In his remarks, the Honouree, Professor Vremudia Diejomaoh was full of gratitude to the university management and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Prof. Diejomaoh appreciated all contributors to the book for their inputs and efforts which he described as further reinforcement of his optimism that all hope is not lost for Nigeria.

While adjudging Nigeria’s developmental journey a marathon, the Honouree challenged government to consider sprinting in specific areas so as to achieve accelerated development.

He specifically urged the federal government to consider adopting a single tenure policy for public office holders to guarantee conception, implementation and completion of developmental projects and policies.

Professor Diejomaoh also advocated an adjustment to the tenure of parliamentarians with a view to giving room for fresh ideas which would engender development.

There were remarks by the Chairman of the event, Senator (Dr) Femi Okurounmu; the Chief Launcher, Professor Roland Ubogu alongside other dignitaries and well-wishers at the event. They all paid glowing tributes to the Honouree, Professor Vremudia Diejomaoh, describing him as a quintessential personality and a leading light especially in the field of Economics.

Professor Vremudia Diejomaoh joined the service of the University of Lagos in August 1968 as a Lecturer II, he served as a Head of Department of Economics twice (April, 1977 to February, 1978 and September, 1980 to June, 1981) and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences between February, 1978 and July, 1979.

Professor Vremudia Diejomaoh took an early retirement from UNILAG (in July 1987) to pursue a career in the International Labour Organization where he served in various capacities.
