MONKEY POX OUTBREAK: UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS MEDICAL CENTRE ADVISORY

This is an Advisory from the University of Lagos Medical Centre to all members of the University Community on the reported outbreak of Monkey Pox in parts of Africa and Nigeria.

It is very important that we stay informed and adhere to the following health guidelines to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

About Monkey Pox

• Cause: Monkey Pox is caused by a virus (related to Smallpox).
• Transmission: Through direct contact with infected animals or humans, including respiratory droplets, body fluids, or contaminated materials.

Symptoms

• Fever
• Headache
• Muscle Aches
• Swollen Lymph Nodes
• Rash (starts on the face, spreads, and forms scabs)

Prevention:

• Avoid close contact with people who have Monkey Pox-like rashes.
• Practice good hygiene: wash your hands regularly and use Hand Sanitisers.
• Use personal protective equipment (PPE) if caring for an ill person.
• Do not share personal items with someone who has Monkey Pox.

If Symptoms Appear:

1. Seek medical attention at the University of Lagos Medical Centre or nearest health facility.
2. Isolate yourself to prevent spreading the disease.
3. Report symptoms to the University of Lagos Medical Centre through provided helplines.
