Five graduating students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have received scholarship awards from the Funmi Babington-Ashaye Foundation.
The five recipients of the awards are:
- Aroyehun, Damilola Deborah with a CGPA of 4.52
- Bamigboye, Halimat Busayo with a CGPA of 4.52
- Fasanya, Oluwasegun Joseph with a CGPA of 4.49
- Gibsosn-Dick, Ororomu Jennie with a CGPA of 4.36
- Ganiyu, Oluwapelumi Hannah with a CGPA of 4.35
According to the representative of the donor and General Manager, Risk Analyst Insurance Brokers Limited, Mr. Sunday Oyeniyi, the awards were instituted by the donor as means of giving back to the society by supporting students.
He explained that the donor, Dr. Funmi Babington Ashaye chose to institute the awards in the Department of Actuarial Science & Insurance because she had graduated from that department at Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH). She thus believed it was fitting to establish a prize at LASPOTECH and UNILAG.
Mr. Oyeniyi, who was accompanied by the Head, Customer service at Risk Analyst Insurance Brokers Limited, Esther Akinyemi, thanked UNILAG Management for giving Dr. Babington-Ashaye the opportunity to give back. He explained that awardees were selected based on their academic performance and indigence level. These were ascertained through interaction with the students.
In response, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics & Research), Prof. Bola Oboh, expressed the University’s profound gratitude for the consistent donation by the Foundation. She urged the recipients to imbibe the culture of giving back to their roots as well as always make UNILAG, the Funmi Babington-Ashaye Foundation and the Actuarial Science/Insurance profession proud in whatever they do.
Halimat Bamigboye, on behalf of the awardees, thanked the foundation for the awards. According to her, the award was not just in recognition for their efforts, it was a testament of their hard work and determination at the University of Lagos.
Also present at the award presentation held on Friday, August 16, 2024, were the University Librarian, Prof. Yetunde Zaid; Acting Registrar, Mrs. Olakunle Makinde; Bursar, Mrs. Oluwafunmilola Adekunle; Director, Office of Advancement, Dr. Taiwo Ipaye; sub-Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Dr. Samson Ogege, representing the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. A. A. Sulaimon; Dr. Ashim Sogunro, the representative of the Head of Department of Actuarial Science & Insurance, Prof. Hamadu Dallah; Acting Director, Academics Affairs Directorate, Mrs. Abosede Wickliffe and Mr. Felix Akeju of the Office of Advancement.
The Funmi Babington-Ashaye Foundation was incorporated on October 22, 2015. It was borne out of the founder, Mrs Funmi Babington-Ashaye’s empathy for students from humble backgrounds and an aim is to support their academic excellence. This scholarship award of one hundred thousand naira per awardee, is focused at providing support to 400 level students with excellent academic performance.
