Walk Against Drug Misuse
Despite the gloomy weather and drizzle on Tuesday morning, members of the Pharmacy, University Management, well-wishers and university community came out to partake in the anniversary Walk against Drug Misuse.
Welcoming participants to the Walk, the Managing Director of Unilag Pharmacy, Dr. Evelyn Brambifa appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, University Management team, and UNILAG Pharmacy Management Board for their efforts and contributions to the Pharmacy.
She noted that the theme for the 10th year anniversary, “Drug Misuse: A Looming Menace” was selected due to rising menace of drug abuse “as a scourge currently eating up families and the society at large, eroding relationships, leading to loss of funds, affecting productivity etcetera”.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics & Research), Prof. Bola Oboh who represented the Vice-Chancellor at the event, congratulated UNILAG Pharmacy for serving the University community diligently over the years, and appreciated the Board led by Mr. Adeniyi for its help in turning the Pharmacy around. She expressed Management’s gratitude at the positive changes and its earnest expectation of more progress.
Prof. Oboh also asserted that the choice of the theme for the celebration was a germane one, and expressed hopes that the Pharmacy would adequately sensitize the University community, especially students, on the misuse of drugs. She assured that UNILAG Pharmacy would soon be a go-to for medication on campus and wished them a successful 10th year celebration.
The Chairman, UNILAG Pharmacy Board and Group Managing Director/CEO, Vitafoam Nigeria Plc., Mr. Taiwo Adeniyi thanked the management for the support shown the Board in carrying out its assignment. He reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to making UNILAG Pharmacy a viable business, contributing continuously to university funds.
The walk commenced at the Senate House, through New Hall where there was a quick stop to address students in the halls of residence on the dangers of drug misuse, to the Main gate and then back to the campus, ending at the Pharmacy.
Talk show on UNILAG 103.1fm
Later in the day, members of the university community and public were thrilled to a talk show on Drug Misuse: A Looming Menace on UNILAG 103.1fm.
During which the radio show, Pharm. (Dr.) Brambifa explained the meaning of drug overuse, underdose, and misuse as well as consequences of drug misuse and adverse effects of drugs on an individual, family, and society at large. According to her, 15% of the Nigerian populace misuse drugs, and that is twice the global percentage.
Dr. Brambifa advised the university community and general public to get proper drug prescriptions, purchase drugs from reputable pharmaceutical companies like the UNILAG Pharmacy, finish dosages, adhere strictly to the prescriptions and recommendations of pharmacists. She urged pharmacists to do their bit in ensuring that people adhere to drug prescriptions and not sell drugs to people without proper prescriptions. She also charged the government to do more in terms of regulating people’s access to certain drugs without a prescription.
Free Health Checks
As part of activities marking the 3-day celebration the Pharmacy conducted free health checks such as blood pressure (BP) checks, blood sugar checks and other health checks for members of the University Community and general public.
