Lagos Assembly Member Empowers UNILAG Students with Scholarship

A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Honourable Rasheed Ademola Shabi has empowered students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) with education support scholarships.

The Lagos State legislator donated the sum of One million naira (N1,000,000), each, to two physically challenged students of the Department of Arts Education: Mr. Aloh Chukwudi Emmanuel (English Education) and Miss Okeke Chioma Joan (Early Childhood Education), in recognition of their academic performances. He also announced that students of the University with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.50 and above will also benefit from his education support scholarships.

He demonstrated his large-heartedness at an event facilitated by the Youth Connect Committee of the University of Lagos Women Society (ULWS). The event was held on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at the J.F. Ade-Ajayi Main Auditorium .

Speaking on the theme, The Journey Ahead, the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Environment emphasised the vital role that youths have to play in national development.

“For our youths to be able to play their roles in the nation’s development, quality education is a must for them. Education is a catalyst for societal progress, and we must encourage our youths to ride on its wings to the attainment of their fullest potentials”.

Honourable Shabi bemoaned the prevalent Japa craze by which many young Nigerians are emigrating to other countries in search of greener pastures due to the lack of opportunities back at home.

“In our time, it was those who were less brilliant and could not compete that travelled abroad. But now, everyone wants to Japa, because, rightly or wrongly, there are no opportunities here for our young people. That is why we must identify young people with promise and give them the fullest support that they deserve. That is why I am here – to encourage and support you”.

According to him, “this gesture aims to inspire dedication and commitment among our students, while facilitating their seamless educational journey towards becoming contributors to nation-building”.

The Chairperson of the University of Lagos Women Society (ULWS) and former Registrar of the University of Lagos, Dr. (Mrs) Folasade Ipaye, FNIM stood in for the Vice-Chancellor at the event.

She expressed gratitude to Honourable Rasheed Ademola Shabi for his remarkable generosity and compassion towards the less privileged members of society, particularly students who are in dire need of financial support.

“Your act of generosity will never be forgotten, as it blends very well with our Vice-Chancellor’s determination to ensure that no student of the University of Lagos will drop out of school because of financial incapacity. We are very grateful to you”.

The Youth Connect Initiative of the ULWS affords students of the University of Lagos the opportunity to interact with each other and be exposed to life advancement opportunities brought by friends and partners of the University.
