Forty-two (42) students of the Department of Building, University of Lagos have been inducted into the esteemed Graduate Membership Cadre of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB).
Miss Eze Ugochi Calistar was the star of the ceremony held on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences Auditorium, with her recognition and award as the Best Graduating Student. The scholar who graduated with a CGPA of 4.78 was full of gratitude to God, her lecturers, family, and colleagues for contributing to her achievement of the remarkable feat.
At a colourful Induction Ceremony, the 3rd of its kind, , the 1st Vice-President of the institute, Bldr. (Hon.) Bimbo Kolade, FNIOB who represented the National President of the NIOB, Bldr. (Sir) Alderton Ewa Ewa, FNIOB administered the Induction Oath on the students.
He congratulated the Inductees on the attainment of another milestone in their academic and professional journey, and urged them to brace up for the practice and ethical demands that the discipline of Building will make of them.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the University of Lagos and the Department of Building for consistently producing graduates of exceptional quality. The Nigerian Institute of Building is proud to welcome these talented individuals into our esteemed cadre, and we look forward to their valuable contributions to the growth and development of the construction industry.”
The Managing Director/CEO of Build Consult Ltd., Bldr. Chucks Omeife, FNIOB was the Guest Lecturer who presented a paper on Professional Development and Code of Ethics.
Represented by a distinguished Academic, Bldr. (Dr.) Adesina Aladeloba, the Guest Lecturer urged the Inductees to embrace life-long learning. “Your graduation from school is only the beginning of your journey. As you begin your journey into the Building profession today, you must realise that your education continues. A commitment to life-long learning is what will keep your updated and relevant in the industry. Add to that a dedication to ethics in your practice, and you will continue to soar”, he said.
In his Welcome Address, the Head of Department, Professor John Ameh, commended the Inductees for their resilience and determination to see their programme through to the end, despite the challenges encountered.
His words: “I would like to commend you for your perseverance and dedication that made you overcome all challenges in your studies, thus emerging as successful graduates of UNILAG, the University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride. As you commence your professional journeys, I implore you to strive to represent the UNILAG brand with excellence. Ensure to uphold at all times the core values of integrity, leadership, and academic prowess that UNILAG stands for”.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics & Research), Professor Bola Oboh, represented the Vice-Chancellor at the ceremony. She commended the Building Department for their selfless grooming of the students up to the point where they could be admitted into Graduate Membership cadre of their professional body. She also congratulated the Inductees and challenged them to keep being good ambassadors of the University of Lagos.
“Your induction today, in spite of the disruptive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and ASUU strike, speaks of your resilient nature. The University of Lagos congratulates and challenges you to be good ambassadors of our good name out there in the industry”.
The 3rd Induction Ceremony by the Department of Building was well attended by faculty members, industry professionals, executive officers of the Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Institute of Building, among others.
