A 400-level student of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Mr. Nkemakonam Anthony Oguejiofor has emerged as the Overall Prize Winner of the 11th Continental Essay Competition on Standardisation organised by the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO).
Mr. Oguejiofor was previously crowned the national champion by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), earning him the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the continental level. The Competition had the theme: Empowering Consumers through Standardisation to achieve their rights to safe Quality Goods and Services.
Instituted by the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) in 2014, the annual continental essay competition is for students below the age of 35 years and in approved institutions of higher learning in Africa. The competition was instituted to engage and sensitize African youths on the benefits of standards in the socio-economic development of the continent and their respective countries.
The African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) is Africa’s intergovernmental standards body. It has the fundamental mandate to develop tools for standards development, standards harmonization and implementation of these systems to enhance Africa’s internal trading capacity, increased Africa’s product and service competitiveness globally, and uplift of the welfare of African consumers as well as standardization forum for prospects in international trade referencing.
